‘Test Card F’ - 3rd Edition

76cm x 56cm

Edition of 20

Seven layer hand-pulled screen print onto 400gsm paper.

Individually finished with 12 carat white gold leaf.

Made in London, by hand, with love.

One of the most recognisable images in British TV history the Test Card F was used by the BBC for over three decades. Its technical functions to check thing like focus and contrast faded into the background as the enigmatic image of the girl, Carol Hersee, and her clown teddy, Bubbles, came to define it.

I first reimagined this iconic image in 2018 as a large glass, steel and gold piece for the new Soho House White City, inside the old Television House, home of the BBC. It proved to be one the most popular artworks ever placed in a Soho House venue. Two screen print editions were released of it in 2019 and 2022 and both sold out in under 48 hours. You can read more about how that commission came about here.

Now its back! In an all new third edition, I’ve tweaked the design and made it slightly larger than the previous editions. And of course it has a new colour palette, one that is inspired by the CMYK print process, a kind of test print of a test card.

Printed in London by Mansons Press.

Please note: this has been made by hand over many stages of labour. There may be some slight variations in the print you receive to the one you see in the photos.

Prints are posted rolled in a reinforced extra wide cardboard tube.
