Original Painting
This piece takes inspiration from classic Momento Mori still life compositions painted during the Renaissance. A golden skull is surrounded by other images to remind us of life’s impermanence: a burnt out candle, an hourglass, a flower, a snail and a butterfly.
In contemporary times reminding ourselves that we’ll die one day has fallen out of fashion. Modern medicine makes us feel invincible, death has become an inconvenience. Five hundred years ago death was an intimate part of life, and I like the idea of having an artwork in your life to remind you to look up from your phone once in a while because life is fragile.
Remember, YOLO is not just for saying ironically before spending £5 on a slice of cake, you do genuinely only live once.
